The Famous Bulgarians: John Atanasoff
Atanasoff dumps Monroe. Says speed has become an issue.
Okay, I hear you, he’s not 100% Bulgarian, but that doesn’t stop us from feeling that patriotic pride when we hear his name! And why shouldn’t we? His grandfather died fighting for our people’s independence. I’m sure he would want his grandson’s name to be marked down in Bulgarian history.
Even as a child, Atanasoff demonstrated characteristics of an inventive personality and with his parents’ encouragement, he developed a keen interest in physics and mathematics, as well as various other subject areas such as crochet and British Literature. He graduated high school at the age of 15 and, fascinated by computing devices and the precision they achieved, he learned how to make complex calculations using different bases. That included binary math, which later helped in the development of the ABC (Atanasoff Berry Computer).
Early on in high school he had decided to dedicate his life to theoretical physics and chose the closest subject available at the University of Florida – electrical engineering. He did his masters at the Iowa State College because it was the first offer he received and due to “the institution’s fine reputation in engineering and sciences. The work on his doctoral thesis, The Dielectric Constant of Helium, gave JVA his first experience in serious computing.” John was working on that very thesis, when he thought, “to hell with this!” Wait, no. Sorry. That’s what I said right before I handed in my Maths exam… Anyway, “he spent hours on a Monroe calculator, one of the most advanced calculating machines of the time. During the hard weeks of calculations […] JVA acquired an interest in developing a better and faster computing machine.” Thus the idea for the ABC was conceived and about a decade later, the machine was born. Shift scene to nearly a century later and we have Mac Books on every desk in every western-world university… What a time to be alive!

Вече чувам всички да протестират как той всъщност не е “чист” българин, но личната му хигиена по никакъв начин не може да ни възспре от това да чувстваме патриотическата гордост, когато чуем името Джон. И защо пък да не се гордеем? Дядо му се е борел за независимостта на България, когато е изгубил живота си. Той би искал името на неговия внук да остане в историята на неговата родина!
Така, по същество – още като малък (почти винаги така започва разказа) той демонстрира наклонности на изобретателен индивид, като с подкрепата на родителите си проявява сериозен интерес към физиката. Налага се да запише специалност елктро-инженерство, тъй като физиката не присъствала в учебния план на Гейнсвилксия университет. Всъщност избора на електрониката не е толкова случаен. На девет годишна възраст със семейството му се нанасят в къща, в която има ток (първата такава за тях. Джон открива и поправя, лошо свързана електрическа крушка на верандата и от там се поражда интереса му към техниката.
Всъщност идеята за първия компютър се ражда докато Атанасов пише магистърската си теза и му се налага да се бори с изключително бавната за неговите нужни машина – калкулатор Монро. Той тогава решава, че непременно има нужда от по-ефективен метод за решаване на математически уравнения. Така след още няколко години заедно със студента по електроинжинерство, когото наема, започват работа над първия по рода си Атанасов-Бери Компютър.
